Congratulations to 2016 AAPS Foundation Graduate Student Fellowship winner:

Mohd M. Khan
PhD Pharmaceutical Sciences
2016 AAPS Foundation Graduate Student FellowMohsinKhan

AAPS Foundation Graduate Student Fellowship Award recognizes recipient’s academic excellence and novelty of the proposed research in the discovery, development, and manufacture of drugs.
Research project: Anti-Sepsis Therapeutics Design using Structure/Function Relationship” under the mentorship of eminent mass spectrometrist and Isaac E. Emerson Chair of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Prof. Dave Goodlett, at the UMB School of Pharmacy. Khan’s project spans structural biology, mass spectrometry, microbiology, and immunology to solve decades old problem: why earlier designed anti-sepsis therapeutics failed in treating septic shock and how structure/function of receptor-endotoxin dynamics could be exploited in designing anti-sepsis therapeutics.

Research Project: Characterization of the RNA recognition properties of Cleavage and
Polyadenylation Specificity Factor 30 (CPSF30): A Novel Drug Target for Carcinoma.
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Sarah L. J. Michele
My project will focus on elucidating the molecular basis of the interaction
between Cleavage and Polyadenylation Specificity Factor (CPSF – a protein involved in
RNA processing) and its RNA targets. The first phase of the project will involve
identifying potential RNA targets of CPSF30 and determining their structures using insilico
and in-vitro approaches, while the second phase will comprise investigating how
the interaction between CPSF30 and its RNA targets occurs.
