Registration for ABAE Tutoring for Fall 2026 is now closed.

Dear Parent/Guardian: We invite middle and high school students to participate in the A Bridge to Academic Excellence Tutoring Program (ABAE). ABAE student organization was established in 2000, and students across our various UMB programs will serve as tutors. ABAE offers tutoring to grades 9-12 in Algebra, English/Writing, Geometry, Biology, Chemistry and Calculus.

During tutoring sessions, tutors reinforce skills, not teach the subjects, that students learn in school. Students should bring all necessary materials, including lesson plans and homework. We will have light snacks and refreshments for participants during tutoring sessions.

Program Expectations

  • Students are expected to use their class materials and/or homework. It is mandatory that all students come prepared with homework and questions.
  • Students must work diligently and be attentive during the sessions. ABAE is dedicated to student success and the only way to be successful is to have students learning and using their tutoring time wisely and proactively.
  • Students are expected to be respectful to the tutors. UMB Tutors are volunteering their time and effort. Students may not be disruptive to the classroom environment.
  • Tutoring sessions begin at 10am. Students are expected to be in the session for the duration of the tutoring session unless parent notifies ABAE personnel prior to the session.
  • Tutoring sessions end at noon. Children must be picked up on time. If pick up exceeds 15 minutes after dismissal, the family will receive one warning. If it happens a second time, the student will no longer be permitted to participate.

Tutoring sessions will not be held when Baltimore City, Baltimore County, or the University of Maryland Baltimore is closed for inclement weather. See UM Alerts at: http://www.umaryland.edu/alerts/ or call 410-706-8622 for University weather related closing information.
